GILI AIR

"Arriving on Gili Air my main priority was to find a diving company, and book a dive for the morning. After visiting a few different dive shops I finally settled with the first, and arranged a dive for 8am. Turning up in the morning I discovered I was the only customer on the 8:30 dive, so it was to be just me and my instructor. The dive was at shark point, and despite there being no guarantee of seeing any sharks, my instructor soon found me a white tipped reef shark around 1m long hidden in some rocks. It was amazing to see my first shark, just a shame it didn't come for a swim so I could get a better view!"

Gili Air - at the beach

Gili Air is the closest island to mainland of Lombok. In developing the Gili Islands, the development of tourism of Gili Air was the most overlooked, forgotten. But that's changing nowadays. The budget-minded travellers and tourists who want to discover a tropical island are focussed now on Gili Air. Many tourists here taste the atmosphere of the original Gili Air and they get the feeling of really being part of the close knit local community.

You can walk around Gili Air island by foot in two and a half hours, but be sure to pack some good shoes as you’re heading well off the beaten track. Bicycles are widely available for rent.
The sea is calmest in the morning and all transport stops running in the late-afternoon, well before dark. During periods of southerly winds and in July and August especially, the swell can be a bit hairy and you are very likely to get wet on the crossing. It is advisable to place laptops, cameras and hand phones in waterproof bags for the crossing. You will need to wade through shallow sea when disembarking, so wear either appropriate footwear, or none at all.

Order to show how Gili Air slowly is trying to catch his big brother Trawangan, an ATM machine is installed. It is located on the east side in the middle of what you may call the main strip, basically the concentration from the harbour to another fairly new operation of bungalows called Bibi’s.

The ATM accepts all common credit cards, such as - Visa, MasterCard, Cirrus and Maestro even. The big advantage for tourists is, that they do not have to take bundles of cash with them to the island.
With the installation of the new power cable from the mainland to Gili Air, there's new era dawned. However there are some small "Mati Lampu" or power outages, that may occur for a few hours.

More accommodation, cafés and bars are slowly starting to spring up to complement the three dive centres on the main beach strip.
There are internet facilities at the Ozzy Shop (who also rent bicycles) and in a tiny wartel (phone shop) behind Villa Karang but the connection is far from reliable. For its size Gili Air actually has a wide range of accommodation to suit every taste and budget either on the beach or set back in the coconut groves.
There is a treasure to find of rustic and quiet bungalows, cabins and rooms. Either between the lovely trees or along the beach.

On the east coast the sea is not so deep and you can easily reach the coral reef. It is perfectly safe as long as you do not dangerous and don't go swimming beyond the coral reef. Snorkelling gear is available from the local operators and dive centres will point you in the right direction for some marine adventure.

Gili Air - something to eat or drink....

Gili Air doesn’t have the full on party vibe of big brother Gili Trawangan but it still has enough entertainment to keep the average traveller smiling. In high season uou can expect, that there are some parties in the evening at the beach. For those who do not like the beach parties can have fun with social drinking.
Most beachfront bars are no frills and all usually close early around 11pm.

Some accommodations:

  • Coconut Cottages - lovely gardens planted with colourful hibiscus. Restaurant, private villa, spacious verandas on each cottage. Several other restaurants are within a 5 min walk. Ozzy's Surf shop, which arranges day trips and transportation, is about 100 m from the entrance to the Cottages

  • Hotel Gili Air - a bit out of the way on the north end of the west side of the island. Tranquil grounds, restaurant, modern bungalows. They have four levels of rooms ranging from standard to luxury.

  • Sejuk Cottages - well designed and maintained, thatched roof, split level lumbung-style cottages. The living areas are upstairs and all have ocean views. The downstairs bedrooms have outdoor bathrooms attached. Swimming pool and the Blue Marlin dive operator is nearby.

  • Villa Karang - good quality bungalows. The grounds are not that nice though, and the south side of the island is more prone to rough water and can be quite windy. The name is misleading as they are not offering villas.

Lombok in the distance from Gili Air

Island hopper boats are the preferred mode of transport to Gili Air from Gili Trawangan, neighbouring Gili Meno and mainland Lombok. Gili Air is a thirty minute ride from Gili Trawangan with boats leaving from Trawangan harbour at 9.30am and 4.00pm and stopping at Gili Meno first before continuing onto Gili Air at approximately 9.45am and 4.15pm.
