Penataran Agung Ped

Another unique attraction of Nusa Penida is the Pura Penataran Agung Ped. This beautiful temple is located in the village of Ped on the main road along the north coast between Toyapakeh and Sampalan. The temple is very famous in all corners of Bali and the three Nusa islands. The temple is majestic at 50 meters from the beach. It is an extremely important temple for Hindus and many of them make an annual pilgrimage to this temple to pray here to ask for protection against illness and death. This temple is built on a fairly large site.

We always call this temple the "Penataran Agung Ped Temple" or "Dalem Ped Temple" because there are two names for this temple with the largest area on Nusa Penida. It is therefore a fairly large temple complex. Legend has it that prayer and meditation in this temple give eternal balance to one's life, balancing the physical with the transcendent.
Before you enter any sacred temple in Bali or Nusa Penida, you must wear traditional Balinese clothing such as a "kamen" (or sarong) and a scarf for tourists. But the Balinese people usually use a kebaya for clothing. You must follow this rule to continue to purify this temple and to respect the local cultures of Nusa Penida.

Five temple locations are united in the Pura Penataran Agung Ped area.

  1. The Pura Segara, as the place where Batara Baruna is located, lies at the northernmost point close to the sea coastline. A few meters to the south Pura Taman leads with a swimming pool around the pelinggih. This temple functions as a cleansing place. The waves of the ocean can be heard from this temple.
  2. In the south there is the Taman temple with the ornamented with lotus plants around the pelinggih. This temple is a place of sanctification.
  3. The main temple is located in the western part, which is Penataran Ratu Gede Mecaling as the main temple that symbolizes the supernatural power of the ruler of Nusa.
  4. In the eastern part there is Peleban Ratu Mas.
  5. The last one is Bale Agung in jaba tengah (outpart agent) which becomes the permanent place for barata-barata when performing ngusaba (ritual ceremony).

The Pawawali ceremony in this temple is held with every C Meng Klawu Buddha. C meng Klawu Buddhist day is a day to remind Hindus of a financial day (Pujawali Batari Rambut Sedhana). On this day, Hindus are reminded that the money is used correctly and precisely as possible. The money is a tool to get different means of life, so that it can also be used to create an inexhaustible way of life. That money is a means of achieving the life's purpose of realizing Dharma, Artha, and Kama as the basis for attaining Moksha (the liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth).
