GRAB

"My GRAB taxi from the Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort to the airport cost only IDR 39,000 / USD $3 / EUR 2.70 (insanely less than a taxi or hired car)!
After spending 3 months on Bali, I hope you’ll trust me when I say that Grab Car is the cheapest transfer service to and from the airport that you’ll find on Bali. Taxis add on crazy surcharges, hotels that don’t offer free pick-ups often charge upwards of IDR 200,000 / USD $15.50 / EUR $14, and private car and drivers — while they are absolutely comfortable and you can be guaranteed they speak English — are the most expensive option of them all."

Travel cheaply with Bali Taxi with GRAB
In Bali you have few options for traveling by public transport and if you do not want to rent a moped, you will soon have to rely on taxis, which are often quite expensive. During our visit to Bali we received a super handy tip from a local so that you can travel by taxi at very low prices. This free app is not only useful for Bali, but you can also use it in many other major cities in Southeast Asia.

First buy a local SIM card
It is very useful to buy a local SIM card, because it can happen that the taxi drivers call you when they are there to pick up.
In addition, you also always have internet on your mobile and that is necessary for the app. A SIM card costs 15k and it is advisable to purchase 100k calling credit. Together this is around 7 euros.

Grab app
Then you download the free app, which has quickly become extremely popular in countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. It is Uber's biggest competitor on the Asian market. Via this app locals can register as a driver and anyone can indicate for which route he or she needs a taxi ride. We have been using the app for a few years in the Far East and it also works fantastic in Bali. Then you download the free app, which has quickly become extremely popular in countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. How does it work?
Open the app on your mobile. You can set a location from where you want to be picked up and where you want to go. You can choose the location from where you are at the moment, enter an address or search for a location via the map. You get the name of your driver and the license plate number of your GRAB taxi. Then you immediately see the price, which is really great. We estimate that the prices are around half when you take a normal taxi. Sometimes we are in the taxi for half an hour for around € 2.50.
The great thing about Grab is that you can pay the driver in cash as opposed to the Uber app where you need a credit card. There is almost always a driver nearby and you do not have to wait long. On the map you can see exactly where the driver is and he will probably still call you to let you know how long it will take before he gets there.
